What are the benefits of music therapy treatment for people with

Alzheimer’s disease

or another form of

Dementia?

  • Music therapy interventions can increase melatonin, serotonin, and prolactin production.  This hormonal balance can result in improvements in mood and cognitive function.

  • Hearing preferred music may promote singing, even in individuals with limited verbal abilities.  Singing may improve an individual’s orientation to the present time, place, and people around them and result in an increase in both verbal and non-verbal communication.

  • Music can be used as an effective stimulus for movement and exercise.  The predictable and rhythmic nature of music creates improvement in neurologic coordination.  Music can also be used to slow down breath and heart rate to facilitate a relaxation response in the body.

  • Music Therapy consists of many diverse interventions that are adaptable and can meet the changing needs of the client.
